Bridging Home and School Through Powerful Literacy Practices

Hi, I’m Dr. Kae — educator, mom of four boys, and a woman who believes literacy is a pathway to power. It’s not just about decoding words — it’s about helping kids see themselves, own their stories, and believe in who they’re becoming.

For me, education has always been personal. I’ve seen what happens when students of color — especially Black boys like my own — aren’t given the tools or confidence to own their voice. I’ve also seen what’s possible when families and schools work together to build something better. That’s why I created CuratED Literacy — to bridge the gap between home and school, and to make sure no child’s brilliance goes unseen or unsupported.

Literacy is more than standards and scores. It’s how our children learn to think critically, speak powerfully, and write themselves into the world.

I believe:

  • Learning should reflect a child’s identity and spark curiosity.

  • Parents are partners, not bystanders.

  • Teachers deserve tools that are culturally relevant and standards-aligned.

  • Every student, no matter their zip code, deserves high expectations and real support.

What I Believe

I don’t just teach — I use data, strategy, and culturally responsive tools to drive results that matter.

In every classroom I lead, my students know that rigor and relevance go hand in hand. I plan intentionally, teach with purpose, and adjust instruction based on what the data tells me students need — without ever lowering the bar.

That approach has produced real outcomes:

  • In the 2017–2018 school year, my students experienced double-digit gains in reading and writing proficiency.

  • In Spring 2025, 100% of my American Literature students passed the Georgia EOC, with 85% scoring Proficient or Distinguished — far exceeding state averages.

What’s behind that success?

  • I build every lesson on clear standards and measurable learning targets

  • I use real-time data to personalize instruction and group students flexibly

  • I infuse my curriculum with multimodal, culturally responsive texts that help students connect personally to what they’re learning

  • I teach kids how to think, not just what to write — and that shows in their growth

Whether I’m leading a class or a professional development session for teachers, I bring the same focus— alignment, relevance, and high expectations — for every learner.

A Little About My Work

85% of my students scored Proficient or Distinguished on the GA EOC — far exceeding state averages. Every student passed, and the majority excelled.
